I would LOVE to see MIDI over USB on the Octopus/Nemo. In my opinion, the bandwidth limitations of standard DIN-based MIDI are the greatest flaw of these sequencers. The amount of data you can spit out soon overwhelms the connection and leaves you with timing problems. MIDI over USB would solve this, at least for those of triggering software as well as hardware.
Unfortunately, Gabriel has told me in the past that the current hardware is not capable of this, so I doubt we’ll see it. Although personally, I’d quite happily pay to have the hardware upgraded to make this possible…
Julian ParkerParticipantIt’s not in 1.62, but if Gabriel is into it I’m sure it will come soon enough.
Julian ParkerParticipantThanks for your reply Gabriel! I’ve actually contributed a little to the discussion you linked already, and it seems like things are moving towards a satisfying solution
Quote:This has to do with the fact that in page mode we want the steps to toggle as soon as you press the button, not release the button. What you suggest would of course solve the issue above, but in my opinion feels unnatural in the general use case where you simply toggle steps.I guess this is maybe a question of personal preference. Normally when I toggle steps, I press the button and release quickly. In this situation for me, there would be very little difference between the step toggling on ‘button down’ or on ‘button up’. The only time I press and hold a step in this mode, is when I tweak it – in which case the immediate toggle on ‘button down’ is annoying.
I can see why the current behaviour might be an advantage if you like to toggle steps with a slower button press, but I imagine (perhaps incorrectly!) that most people don’t work this way.
Anyone else have an opinion on this issue?

Can you please explain in more detail how this would work in Step mode? By Step mode I mean the mode where the matrix is dedicated to showing the attributes of only one step..
Thanks,
Gabriel[/quote]I was thinking that it would work similarly to the way it works in PAGE ‘Berlin’ edit mode i.e. click and hold a step (in this case, obviously in the bottow row), then click another step to set the end of the note.

So may I propose, that the new EDIT PERFORM state (Berlin) takes the place of EDIT state, and we go back to having the EDIT button switch between two states. The old EDIT state could be reached by holding some other button while pressing EDIT.
How do you like that guys?
I’d like that a great deal personally! With the addition of the ability to zoom into step/track mode via double-click from the ‘Berlin’ state, things would be perfect!
It would also bring the function of the EDIT button in Page mode somehow closer to it’s function in Grid mode i.e. green EDIT LED means you can toggle steps or pages, and yellow EDIT led means you can tweak steps or pages. Conceptually clearer and more musical in my opinion!
Julian ParkerParticipantYeah, we’re talking about the same thing I guess even discussing it is a little confusing!
Julian ParkerParticipantI completely agree with this, it’s my one big problem with the interface of the Octo/Nemo. I feel like a lot of features that are useful for basic editing are spread out between normal PAGE mode, the Page EDIT modes and STEP mode, without a quick enough path between them and without any obvious musical reason for the feature being only available where it is. For example, if I want to edit step lengths using the new ‘press 2 steps’ method (which I love!), I have to be in Page EDIT mode and can’t switch to STEP mode to do detailed editing(of chords for example) without first clicking back into normal Page mode. It’s confusing!

Cheers,
GabrielThis currently works in Page edit mode only, correct? I can certainly see the argument for not implementing it in normal Page mode, as it could obstruct the toggling of multiple steps. It would be great to have it in Step mode however, and I can’t see how it would obstruct any other functionality – thoughts anyone?
