KeymasterThanks for replying…..
It’s good to hear there’s another Aussie with one!
Did you get yours through awave? I think they
are the only ones stocking it over here.I think I will have to try synch from the Octopus
if it looks like it will work. As I have found out, Logic version 8 doesn’t seem to do synch slave, so Iwill
stay on the current version until something to replace
it, for the purposes of recording comes along. This is a big purchase for me. I hope I am doing the
right thing, but I am pretty keen and I’ve already
learnt a bit from the tutorial videos and manual. Now I just can’t wait to get this thing first hand!

Keymasteranother aussie octopus user! welcome… i too am in melbourne – have had mine for a bit over 2 years… i guess yours would be the 2nd one to make it down here as far as i know

i wouldn’t be using logic as the master clock – computer based clocks are awful… the octopus clock is brilliant – generally i sync everything to either the octopus or my mpc4000… but logic is the last thing i would sync to – part of the appeal of hardware sequencing is the superior clock and you’d be losing that if syncing to computer

KeymasterI used to use a MOTU MidiExpressXT in my previous setup (the old model), and it worked wonders.
Unfortunately is serial parallel port only, and I’m now using my AMT (which was in the closet for a long time.
AMT can only reroute from port to port (not rechannelize), so it cannot work as a proper standalone patch-bay, and at least on PC they have at times some timing problems over USB (that’s why it was closed in a closet).
Anyway I managed to set up a fairly complex routing in Cakewalk (and a slightly simpler one with Live) in an hour or so, I now have a nice map with which instrument channels responds to what Octopus channel. So I don’t think it would be a problem with Logic.
With this set-up I do save the midi together with the audio, as a precaution and because usually I don’t really need to save the pages in the Octopus.
Anyway, I’d like to work less with the computer, so I’ve got a saved search on ebay for motu midi express xt (usb) [ain’t got spare pci ports].

KeymasterYes the Channel Splitter Method works in Logic. The only bad think with Logic 8 is that it do not accept Midi Clock in. So Logic can not be a Slave of Octopus.

KeymasterYes, that sounds very nice to me.

KeymasterThis is now fixed as well, and included in the next OS release.
gseher
KeymasterI can imagine that – although somehting this is hardly anything that would be due to faulty hardware. So for now just enjoy the machine!
gseher
KeymasterOK – this is also fixed in the upcoming OS release.
gseher
KeymasterI think so, ThanksB)

KeymasterNo problem Adam – important is that you are up and running now. If it is / was an Octopus glitch that we in the end can track down and therefore fix, I’ll be just as glad!

KeymasterAlso, what I use for testing is a MIDI monitor application, like MIDI Monitor on the Mac or MIDI-Ox on Windows. I find that the most reliable way. You may also try a different MIDI interface, just to be sure.
Btw, I have been using the TI as a MIDI interface without any problems ever.gseher
KeymasterOK – fixed in the next OS version.

KeymasterHello Adam,
I have tried to replicate the problem but was not able to – in spite of your very accurate explanation. What you are observing is that the Notes do not get generated correctly, right? So that is really independent of the synth you are using in the "back-end".
I have both listened to a mono synth and monitored the MIDI stream, but do not see any irregularities. I have tried three notes on different tracks, different pitches and all possible permutations of length combinations, especially overlaps.
Has anyone else been able to re-produce this?
It seems rather strange that something this basic would have passed unnoticed for such a long time now.
Another question to you would be how your MIDI stream is routed – do you go via direct wires, or do you have any other devices between Octopus and the Synth or the MIDI interface that is providing the measurement? Possibly the messages get produced but filtered somewhere in between?

KeymasterPage transfers between OS versions is not supported for versions up to v1.44.
