That’s a good point John. We did not have any good or bad feedbacks from our users about that particular document. We could take the time to bring it up to date. Would somebody else appreciate to put the storyboard online again?

All pages look fine on Safari Beta 3.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.4.10!

Thanks for clearing that up. Are you guys planning on updating the storyboard document? It actually helped me out when making a buying decision because it has some good views of the actual panel (which the navigation guide does not have).

I understand what the current "octopus" implementation of legato is, but I don’t see how it can be useful on most synthesizers… it would result in a hung note (?)

On fingered legato, the notes just have to overlap, but the first note still must have a note-off. This is the way most monophonic (303 clones) implement slide. If no note off is sent for the first note, then the synth will slide back to the original pitch after the second note-off is received.

Again, this behaviour is probably as simple as adjusting the LEN of a step so it ends at least 1/192th after the beginning of the following step.

    Hi John,

I don’t exectly know if I get the point here. Do you want to extend the step length by 1 + 1/192? Any step (the LEN attribute in Octopus’ world) can be set to min. 1/192 and max. of 192/192=1. Legato is indeed realised by not sending a note off command. In the current OS 1.02 in Step Mode you can edit the step LEN only by the LEN rotary knob. In other modes i.e. Track Mode one can just click or double click the matrix buttons to set an attribute value. The implementation of this comfortable "entering fearture" in Step Mode is already on our list and could be implemented in our next software release.

See also the tread "wish: step LEN entry"

    Was that helpfull?

    cheers,
    Marcel

Our webpage should be fix since some couple of weeks. Does somebody has any other problems with viewing the contens of our webpage on "what-ever" browser?

    Hi John,

the Octopus can be syncronized either as master or slave only by Midi Clock. The story board on analogue havens webpage is out-dated. It is one of our first documents written for the Octopus. Lot of other things do not match exactly the actual OS 1.02 version as well. The navigation guide on our website is a better choice to get the latest informations about the functions of the octopus.

    Cheers,

Yes – thanks. I read the manual, and set it up that way, but experienced exactly what you described. But I’m still not sure what’s going on with the pitch changing on multiple steps for only one step event change. I described in more detail in an email. It’s kind of fun, but I couldn’t figure out what exactly it was doing.

The channel of the track is channel 1, so I wanted to get jumping between channels 1,2, and 3. However, no matter how I set the main knob, which limits the offset I think, and the amount setting, I can’t get it to come back to channel 1. Well, I’m just floundering around here. Can anyone provide a better explanation than what’s in the manual?

    Hi droolmaster0,

select in STEP MODE, SEL -> MCH and set the AMT value to 1 and the Main Knob to 3
you should see it jumping around between channels 1,2 and 3. However, indeed in OS 1.02 it is never turning back to channel 1 anymore. This is obviously a SW bug and it will be fix in the next SW release. Thank you for this input.

Well, that much I know. But there is more to it, and I want to find out EXACTLY how it is working, which was elusive. For instance, when I set a pitch step event, at one point the pitch was changing at ANOTHER step. Other steps can be affected if they are within a certain range. And as I posted, I was very confused about how step events affected the midi channel. Even being confused by how they are working they are cool – but I’d like to use them more predictably.

    Gabriel,

Yes that makes sense now, I reread the manual and I understand the layout. Thanks!

Now, from the manual and your response I gather it isn’t possible to directly enter the LEN value in the matrix? Currently it must be entered using the encoder (?)

I can deal with it, I’m just used to entering things roughly in 1/16ths and then fine tuning if needed later (using 1/192ths).

I hope to be "with Octopus" in the next couple weeks!

    Thanks

Thanks for the reaction. I have version 1.00 and have also to the test nothing else connect to as e.g. a Kawai piano or one emu 5000. but my OS hooks much nevertheless somewhat. I could never dump (with MidiOX or Miditempplayer) to update my OS. I had only sucsess over USB to write directly the *.elf Datei in to the memory.

what version of the o/s are you using? I haven’t noticed this problem, but then I tend to use the octopus on it’s own… maybe the problem only shows itself when you are using the octopus with other equipment..

    Hello,

I think there might be a misunderstanding there.
    I read here:
    http://www.borg.com/~jglatt/tech/midispec/ctloff.htm
that the "All Controllers Off" message resets controllers to some default values.
That may probably be different than zero for some of the controllers. It also is different from leaving the controller value where it is.
In the link I posted above, those which are reset to zero seem to make sense.
Maybe we should come up with a list of targeted controllers if we think that the link above does list too much or too few controllers.
Duncan, probably the "can of worms" expression there is a good one ;-)
    Regards,
    Xavier

    >>the ‘all controllers off’ triggers some old memory that this may not always produce the desired result. Any chance that this could be optional in some fashion?<<

are you sure you’re not thinking of "all controllers zero"? if the function simply stops any active controllers from transmitting & leaves the controlled device parked where it was, then it would be left to the user to restore normality by re-loading his patch.

but if you send an "all controllers.." message with a value, then some devices will do mad things. I have many modules here that react badly to controller values being sent to zero because the affected parameter actually has 63/64 as it’s "zero" & uses 0-127 in a bipolar fashion.

the yamaha qy70 sends a "set to zero" message on cc66 whenever a pattern is started. I have no idea why- maybe it’s a general midi or XG thing, but it means I can’t use the qy70 with my supernova mk1 unless I shut off osc-3 in every patch.

does anyone else think this is a can of worms? :-)

    d.
