Play buttons in step mode, – is this ducumented?

The three play buttons changes the note lengt for selected step in step mode. I cant find this in the manual. Also, what exactly happens? Because if I press >> the selected step will play twice as long, but LEN remains the same. So where does it really change?

Am I right that the purpose of this feature is to have an easy way to double and quadruple note length?
But couldn´t it just as well work directly on LEN so you could keep focus on the matrix. I think it can add to confusion that in step mode you have to look more than one place to be sure about note length.

The step length multiplier is separate from the matrix because the matrix will only display a full note, i.e. 12 x 16 / 192.
